Riviera Maya & Playa Del Carmen

The Riviera Maya has been a very popular vacation spot, due in part to the many activities that are available, the numerous and varied resort choices and the quick flights from the Midwest.

It's a good idea to venture off your resort, and get a taste of the local culture.
One easy way to do that is taking a cab ride from your resort to 5th Ave in Playa Del Carmen. Your driver will drop you off, and pick you back up at the designated time and place.

Wear comfortable walking shoes, as there are many blocks of shops, restaurants and cafes. Cold bottles of beer can be purchased for $1 a bottle, and there are benches available to sit and people watch.

The ferry that runs from Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel is located downtown. Senor Frogs is right there, and serves great margaritas. The staff is usually very animated and make your visit enjoyable. About a block away is a new mall, that has some really nice stores.

Playa Del Carmen is the place to buy a hand made hammock or pick up your supply of vanilla. Of course T-shirts are plentiful as well.

Winter Weather

It's that time of year. We have our warm weather vacation planned and are dreaming of white sand beaches, 80 degree tempatures and sunshine.
Hopefully, all will go well and we'll get to our destination quickly and easily.

SNOW in Maui???
In my last post you saw photos of Mount Haleakala, very typical. Check out these photos a friend of mine sent. I wonder how long the snow lasted?

Up Country Maui

Most visitors to Maui drive up to see Mount Haleakala crater. It's a fun drive, with amazing views. It seems like you are on the moon.

You'll have a chance to see a Silversword plant, only found there.

Don't sell yourself short and head back to the beaches right away, ride around and explore the area.

Kula Lodge Restaurant has wonderful food and fabulous views. They have an amazing banana pancake breakfast, that is more desert than breakfast.

If you enjoy lavender and protea, a stop at Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm.Lavender is known for its relaxing qualities. The farm is like walking through a botanical garden.

You can purchase anything lavender at the gift shop. Be sure to try the lavender scones, they were delicious.

As you are heading away from Waikiki Beach to H1 on Kapahula Ave. you must stop at Leonard's Bakery. They make fresh Malasadas ( Portuguese fried dough) My favorite is the plain sugared, but they have great filled ones as well.

Fresh Shrimp on the North Shore

As you are driving along Hwy 83 on the North Shore you will come across many shrimp trucks, parked in parking lots our alongside the road.

The one that started this all was Giovanni's.

For $12 you can get a plate of fresh shrimp and rice. Grab a seat at the picnic table and enjoy!

Shave Ice
When you are driving through Hale'iwa town, you must stop at Aoki's or Matsumoto's for shave ice. You get to choose your flavor combination and wheather you want a scoop a vanilla ice cream at the bottom of your "Hawaiian snow cone"

Pearl Harbor

One of the most visited sites in Hawaii is Pearl Harbor. It is a very interesting and moving experience.

Pearl Harbor is in Honolulu on the island of Oahu. If you are visiting on a stop over at the Honolulu airport, it's easy to rent a car and drive there. You need to get on the freeway and take the USS Arizona/Stadium exit #15A, just a short distance from the airport.

If you are staying in Waikiki, you can sign up for a tour, where they pick you up and take you there in a bus. You are paying for the ride and your guide. Other alternatives are to take your rental car or the"Bus".

No purses or camera bags are allowed in, so leave it at your hotel or check it at the Bowfin for a few dollars. You never want to leave any valuables in your car or trunk while visiting Hawaii. Unfortunately there are a few people who prey on visitors.

They start passing out numbered tickets at 7am to those standing in line and open the park at 7:30am. The first group goes in to the theatre for a documentary and exits on to a boat that takes you to the memorial. While waiting for your group to be called you can go through the museum and see all of the artifacts about that fateful day.

On my recent visit, we were in line at 6:30am, were in group 2 and left the park at 9am.

What draws people to Hawaii?

Is it the gorgeous sandy beaches, the numerous activities or fabulous food?
I'd say all of the above, and then some.

It's easy to get there - 8.5 hour flight from Chicago to Honolulu

It's easy to get around - Inter Island flights are readily available and inexpensive - All of the islands have car rentals - Oahu has the "BUS" that you can take anywhere if you don't rent a car

There are a million things to do - Active and inactive
Water sports - snorkel or scuba, whale watch, kayak, sunset cruise or try surfing!
Land adventures - hike in a rain forest, bike down a mountain or watch the sunset.
Take to the sky - para sail or see the sights from a helicopter

Everytime that I travel to Hawaii I most enjoy the people I meet who share the Aloha spirit with visitors. Hawaiian's have a naturally laid back, relaxed hospitality that envelopes you while you are there. The beauty of the poeple mixed with the natural beauty of the islands make Hawaii one remarkable place to visit.

Couples Swept Away - Negril Jamaica

Couples Swept Away is a wonderful All-Inclusive

resort on Negril's famous 7 mile beach.It is in a very jungle garden setting. The buildings are 2 and 3 stories tall, spread throughout lush, tropical gardens.

You have a very private, secluded feeling as you walk around the resort even though it is quite large with 312 rooms. All rooms have these huge balconies, most room categories have this big wonderful hammock.

Swept Away is on a long, wide strech of white sand beach and offers many watersports. The sports complex across the street has everything for the fitness traveler, or for someone wishing to stay in shape and try a new sport while on vacation.

The resort has a nice choice of 6 restaurants, and of course the ever popular swim up pool bar.

This would be a great choice for a couple wanting to get away to relax and enjoy each others company. Lush, tropcial and romantic are the way I'd describe it. Enjoying the water and land sports would be an added bonus.

RIU Tropical Bay - Negril

While staying in Negril, we had a tour of the RIU Tropical Bay. It is located 1-2 miles north of 7 mile beach, on Bloody Bay. This resort is for everyone singles, couples and families. It is a large All-Inclusive resort with 416 rooms, 5 restaurants (2 ala carte require daily reservations) and 2 pools.

The beach here is nice and wide, and gives you about 2 miles to walk on. You can not walk to 7 mile beach from here, unless you walk on the road or take a cab. In the picture on the right, you can see a view of the beach to the north with the RIU Negril in the distance. Tropical Bay guests can use their resort, but RIU Negril guests can not use the Tropical Bay.

The resort is made up of several 3 story buildings with outside entrances to the rooms. All rooms have a balcony and in room bar. Room categories change according to location and they offer a regular room, pictured above as well as a Junior Suite which has a sitting area. The oceanfront rooms are closest to the beach, but are a distance from the water, due to the wide beach area.

Sandals Negril

Upon arrival at the Montego Bay airport you can use the Sandals arrival lounge. Staff will check you in, tag your bags for your resort and then you can relax inside. It's air conditioned has soda and Red Strip on tap, comfortable furniture and clean bathrooms.

Sandals Negril really is a great resort with a focus on the beach.The resort runs parallel to the beach, and most of the restaurants and bars are along the beach making for great views. This resort is a great place for people who love to beachwalk and want to relax. It is located on the north end of 7 mile beach.

The service is very genuine and every staff member attempts to make your stay enjoyable. Everyone greets you with a smile and "how are you today?"

The food was very good and there were always many choices. Sandals incorporates local dishes and uses local produce when possible. One treat that I enjoyed was live music(smooth jazz) when eating breakfast at the Bayside Restaurant. At dinner, you have a choice of 5 restaurants and most offer indoor or outdoor dining. Many couples are enjoying the private candlelight dinner on the beach, how romantic!

Sandals resorts have a high energy Playmakers staff who offer activites all day long. You can be active and particpate in everything, or choose to nap in a hammock under a palm tree. It's completely up to you. Having choices, is what makes your vacation perfect for you.

Coming soon are their new River Suites. These suites are the ultimate in luxury! The bathroom tile is amazing, the room has 2 flat screen TVs and the patio has a step out onto a shallow pool, steps into a river where you can float down to a larger pool. How cool is that?

Just Back, Negril Jamaica!

We had the pleasure of spending a week on the beach in Negril Jamaica. This was my first "stay" in Negril and I enjoyed it totally.

Negril is located on the western coast of Jamaica and is known for its 7 Mile Beach. You can beach walk most of the 7 miles, we tried, but only covered about 5 miles. The water was crystal clear Caribbean turquoise and pretty calm. While floating in the water you could see starfish, rays and many other fish.

The relaxed mood of the area was a great stress reliever. Our biggest decision was should we walk the beach, float around on a floaty or sit under a palm tree and read.

The sunsets are an event here, everyone finds a spot to sit, cocktail in hand and watches as the sun sinks into the ocean with all of it's glorious color. The perfect ending to a perfect day.

Passport Requirements Relaxed - Temporarily

U.S. Citizens with pending passport applications allowed temporary travel flexibility within western hemisphere.

The U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security announced June 7, 2007 that U.S. Citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda who have applied for but not yet received passports can nevertheless temporarily enter and depart from the United States by air with a government issued photo identification and Department of State official proof of application for a passport through September 30, 2007. The federal government is making this accommodation for air travel due to longer than expected processing times for passport applications in the face of record-breaking demand.

Keep in mind that your passport application has to be in process.

Countries that always required a passport (Tahiti, Costa Rica, New Zealand etc.) still have the same requirement.

The best advise I can give is to apply for your passport as early as possible. Once you have it, you're going to love how easy it is to travel. No messy papers to keep track of, just one small book and it's good for 10 years! Do it now!

I've just returned from Nassau Bahamas, where I attended the Bahamas Island Destination Wedding and Honeymoon Symposium. I had the pleasure of meeting Preston Bailey & Sylvia Weinstock and learning about the latest trends in the Destination Wedding and Honeymoon market.

I enjoyed staying at The Atlantis and visiting Sandals Royal Bahamian. One day was spent touring Grand Bahama Island (a 30 minute flight from Nassau) where we visited all of the resorts that cater to Destination Weddings and Honeymoons.

Both islands offer great beaches, are clean, have wonderful restaurants, have casino gambling and are easy to get around. The Bahamas sure offer great resorts to host your wedding or enjoy your honeymoon at.
